PhishTank in Opera 9.10 announcements

Opera 9.10 has been released yesterday inofficial.

Today, the Opera Staff announced it and mentioned PhishTank Fraud Protection and its community.
Opera & OpenDNS (PhishTank) also published a co-op press release.

Last but not least, PhishTank welcomed Opera in a blog post pointing out, that sites rated as fraud by their community won’t be visitable by Opera 9.10 users!

This makes the Opera browser the most phishing secure browser, combining two technologies:

PishTank( OpenDNS) and TrustWatch (GeoTrust).

Jaanus’ comment on Skype Management changes

Jaanus Kase commented on Skype’s recent. management changes.

he hints that this step will lead to some more or less major changes in 2007. Leading to some plans being dropped, others being picked up (or something like that):

There will surely be changes in 2007 about what Skype does and does not do. We have said at various times that we will do a lot of different things. Some of those will not happen, while others will happen that we haven’t yet spoken of. One thing is for sure β€” we will remain true to our original commitment of letting the whole world talk for free, while adding further value with our paid products.

This leaves room for a lot of speculation.

Opera 9.10 Final released

The Opera Desktop Team released the Opera 9.10 Final now. Yet, it can only be downloaded from Opera’s FTP server.

The main feature of this new version is the phishing filter as mentioned in my earlier blog post.

More about this feature can also be read in their help article.

Another one is the full support of GMail and its embended Google Talk client

Last but not least, the feedback button for the phishing filter does no longer open a form (which crashed Opera on some computers) but now asks you to get an account and login at PhishTank as seen on above screenshot!
The Opera Desktop Team wrote about this here

Enjoy! =)

Skype standalone wi-fi with browser login support?

A lot of movement in the Skype standalone wi-fi field.

According to this blog entry, the new Skype wi-fi F1PP000GN-SK will be the first phone containing Boingo source code thus enabling it to “make Skype calls in tens of thousands of Boingo hot spots worldwide, including cafΓ©s, airports, and hotels” (press release).

Even Skype itself offers Boingo services, calling it Skype Zones.

Now, what has Boingo support to do with web browser based wi-fi logins?
Simple: According to this you can use Boingo from webbrowsers or their software. (At least here goes my guess!).

This would make the air for Netgear’s SPH 101 and SMC’s WSKP100 thin, since neither of them has a possibility, and SMC’s phone has a lot of annoying bugs (which will – according to SMC – be corrected in a firmware update).

Skype 3.0. Final is out!

Today, the Skype Staff released the final of Skype 3.0.

Interestingly, they have renamed “chat” into “instant messenger”.

More about the features can be seen also in the blog post here and on Skype’s front page.

If you have enabled update notification, it should also tell you that a new update is available. A lot of people update today as the download server is overloaded. I get a peak of 7kb/s, means the download process took 45 mins.

ICQ 6 Preview Questions & Answers!

The ICQ Team released something new regarding their ICQ 6 Preview release:

The ICQ 6 Preview Questions and Answers. They are very interesting so read them.

The most interesting ones:

Why the limited registration of users?
Since we are still in the early stages of development of our new client, we only wanted to allow a limited amount of users a look at how a product takes shape.

How can I get the ICQ 6 Preview Version?
We will gradually increase the number of users with time, so we can get an even bigger feel of what our users are looking for. Check out this site on a regular basis to see if new downloads are available.

When will the actual version, ICQ 6.0, be released?
We’re aiming for a Spring 2007 release. Stay tuned for updates.

Mail collecting boxes, Postal and Parcel Services

I write a lot about customer support, companies and services and my experiences.

Well, I am not the only one doing this. Another person that triggered my attention is Matt Rudoff. He experienced that the mail collecting box in his area just vanished. He wrote about his continious fight on getting this – for his area – very important mail collecting box back and he succeeded!

Exactly the same thing happened to me down the street, in summer 2005.

The reason for this is the rationalization program “Star” which our Postal Service started end of year 2002, removing thousands of mail collecting boxes in areas which have “low” letter traffic and doing other things to save money.

Well, in 2006, the mail collecting box returned, just over the road. Probably not because of people like Matt, but because of an alternative Postal Service “Morning Post Letter Service” starting to offer their letter delivery service down the street.

The best thing is, letters sent to locations in the postcode areas 68xxx and 69xxx
are automatically sent as opening registered mail. And even if you send it to other places, they do not lose your letters!
I have sent thousands of letters since 1998 using our Postal Service and quite a few of them never ever arrived nor returned to sender! (I still have that theory, that some postmen eat paper for breakfast).

Last week, even our Parcel Service got competition (there are others already, but they are too far for me to easily get there), also down the street: GLS, who cost a few bucks less than DHL, are faster in delivery, and also offering Track & Trace.

Better service for less money, what else would I want? =)
