Microsoft Download Center Beta Preview

Today, Microsoft invited me to have a look at the Microsoft Download Center Beta Preview and I have to admit, it’s looking great!

Here are some screenshots. The new windows udpate, I will check out on Windows XP X64 somewhen since in Vista it asks you to use the update function included in Vista instead.

As you can see, the MarketPlace also got a new face now and the whole thing is more like a small control panel and you can more easily find your way around the whole offerings of the Microsoft homepage

Interesting: Required is the installation of Microsoft’s new Silverlight technology.

new ICQ 6! Build #6039 and many new localized clients

The ICQ Team recently released a new ICQ 6! Build ##6039 and many new localized clients. Thanks to my friend Martin for pointing it out.

The new build features new – animated – emoticons and features some bug fixes like the bug that made people using Windows XP Service Pack 2 not being able to see that that has been copied and pasted!

Unfortunately, I cannot tell more for now, since the installer has some bug, it keeps crashing on me. A bug report has been sent to the ICQ Team already.

The new build and the new languages can be downloaded at >http://www.icq.com/download

A new New ICQ 6 German Pro7 Austria client can be downloaded from the download section of ICQ6 now.

This Austrian localized version features differs from the ICQ 6 Pro7 Germany client, instead it contains the Xtraz known from old German ICQ 5.1 Pro7 client and the Soccer Xtra from the old ICQ 5.1 Sat1 client.

Windows Vista (X64) – good or bad – one year passed

One year of Vista has passed. I have found 2 interesting posts. One saying that it sucks very much, another one saying that it is the best way to get MacOS-like experience for little money.

My catch? Windows Vista is really fun to use, even with only 1 GB of RAM and single core AMD64 3200+ CPU, however I cannot wait for the new multi-core CPU and a better system with 4 GB of RAM. This thing should rock the sky then. Anyway, Vista worked since the final (Use it since February) pretty well for me even with out any updated.

I have however to admit that the Performance and Reliability Packs have made it smoother and more applications work better with each new release.

The most I am disappointed about HardSID not releasing 64bit drivers and Leadtek not convincing the sound chip manufacturer of the PAL version of the LeadTek TVUSB 2 card to supply the source so they make a 64bit XP/Vista driver.

Bad!

I seldom saw any BSOD and I seldom had any serious issues and it’s cool that you can access system restore right from a graphical Vista boot DVD interface. Back in XP times if you couldn’t access the Safe Mode, you were done with it and had to restore an image if nothing else helped.

On the software side I am very disappointed about freeware firewalls which were all either incompatible, or very bad to use and just a piece of trash! The situation changed when the Alpha of the Comodo Firewall came out (final is out since yesterday – download it!).

Skype Video in DVD quality

The situation for Skype Video in DVD Quality seems to have changed (didn’t try as I get the dualcore just this December). Now you need a special webcam like the Logitech QuickCam Sphere AF.
(which I don’t have of course).

More info and details in the Share Skype Blog.

Watch a demonstration including a video animation at Logitech’s High Quality Skype Video info page.

ICQ’s homepage updated a bit

The ICQ Team updated the ICQ homepage a bit, i.e. its layout.

Now there are less main sections and the rest is bundled into sub sections which can be accessed to by a dropdown menu.

Also the function to diplay your groups you have joined in your “My Page” also works now.

Baby, I am hot!

I absolutely *love* my recent gadget purchase. the USB – Cup Warmer & 4 Port Hub!

I just missed the stainless steel cups yet which I just received yesterday. It’s absolutely amazing! It really works! 🙂

Unfortunately at the time I bought mine (which is already a couple of months ago) there was only the USB 1.1 model. So mine is the predecessor of exactly this model shown in the picture.
