Windows Vista and Service Pack 1 RTM

If you are trying to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RTM then it might be you are doomed like me for now! Here is why.

As one can read in The Inquirer blog:

“MICROSOFT’S automatic update service is again in trouble after countless punters found that a corrupt automatic Vista download stuffed up their computers.

Forum and bulletin boards are full of comments from users who are incandescent with rage after getting a mysterious error code 80073712.

Users who contact the Volish help desk are finding that they are about as useful as suntan lotion to a mole who never goes on holiday.

One reader has complained to us that after using one wonderful Volish suggestion he started getting another error with the code of 800B0100.”

Indeed there is one Microsoft worker who knows and has the tools how to fix the error but the tools and fixes have been pulled and he didn’t reply by email or in the Technet Forums yet.

Also the solution with the update installation doesn’t work for me. it aborts with a 700er error saying: “Missing files for performing the update.”.

Also The Update from the original DVD doesn’t work for me, it aborts with a 700er error saying: “Missing files for performing the update.”.

If anybody has the ultimate solution for me please email me! Thanks in advance!

Samba and Windows Vista

I have bought a NAS from a friend second hand. And if you got the same problem like me trying to access your Samba NAS in Windows Vista, then you can find the fix for this on this blog here.

If you are forced or want to fiddle with the registry instead, then read the comment made by Tim:

“Tim – 31/01/07

If you’re running a version of Vista that cannot use secpol.msc, you can edit the registry instead. Just change the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlLsaLMCompatibilityLevel from a 3 to a 1″

This should help a lot of people!

Weird QQ client downloads. English & for Vista

Checking the Wikipedia article of QQ I found out that on the South African site they offer an English version of QQ2003, on the Chinese site however they offer an English version of QQ2005 which even was updated for Vista! Interesting! The download page is even in English!

Now the problem is that the sign up part is still in Chinese and copy & paste won’t work either, but you can use English signup page

Trust not releasing Windows X64 drivers because of the market

I just noticed today, when looking for Vista X64 support of the new keyboard I have just ordered – a Wireless Optical Slimline Deskset DS-3200, that Trust states they won’t release Windows X64 drivers because of the market.

“Are there drivers available for Windows XP64bit?
No, because Windows XP64bit is more for the professional market.
The mouse can be used without driver as a standard 5 button mouse.
Keyboard can be used without driver as standard keyboard.”

I find this weird, as most other manufacturers have XP X64 as soon as they also support Vista in its 64bit version.

There is however a possible workaround: In many cases, Trust keyboards like e.g. the Wireless Optical Deskset DS-3300X are detected by Logitech’s SetPoint software as Logitech Easy Call Desktop which makes most buttons work.

ICQ Blog / sponsor special: Roei Sadan

An ICQ user called Roei Sadan is now featured on the ICQ homepage and with banners in the client. (Probably because the default blog layout of ICQ looks horrible). The Great Journey of Roei Sadan special ia telling us about a trip of a young Iaraelian all around the world with just him and a bike.

He even has an own group/message board in which he posted:

“Hi, my name Roei (Jinji) Sadan and I’m currently embarking on a solo journey covering 56,000 kilometers of continuous bike-riding, across more than 30 countries and five continents. I began my journey on July 29, 2007 from Prudhoe Bay in the north of Alaska to Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America, passing the Rocky Mountains and the Andes on the way. My journey will continue from the western part of Portugal to the eastern part of China, via Europe and the East, including the “Satanic countries”, the Himalayan Mountains, China and Hong Kong. I will then fly to Western Australia and to Sydney, the final stop of my great journey. From there, in about three year’s time, I will make my way back home to Israel.”

Have much fun Roei and arrive well back home!

ICQ on mobile: ICQ SIM!

After offering a MasterCard for their members, ICQ has gone mobile as they offer now something they call ICQ SIM which is a SIM card offering:

-Prepaid SIM card
no monthly fees, no contract

-Chat with your friends on your mobile
at only €0,39 per 333Kb in more than 15 countries

-SMS for only €0,19
worldwide

-Call from only €0,29 per minute
worldwide destinations

-Free incoming calls
in over 80 countries

According to their FAQs, included in the package is also an IM client for your mobile phone named “ICQ SIM”.

The very bad thing about this, that Freecall and premium numbers cannot be dialed, also their SMS plan is more expensive than e.g. the Skype SMS rates.

ICQ SIM’s service provider is United Mobile
