Open known bugs list for Opera 9.50 Kestrel

Since the bug tracking isn’t really open for its users (something even Tim Altman from Opera Software admits), so some fans created a Opera 9.5 Beta Other Known Issues Wikia.

They write:

“The purpose of this temporary wiki is to supplement the rather modest list of Known Issues included in the original posts on the Opera Desktop Team Blog and create a one-stop place to look to see if “your” problem has been confirmed by anyone.

If you’re looking for a place to post what you’d like to see improved in Opera, then please use the Opera Browser Feature Wishes Wiki.
This list will by no means be complete or official, but should consist of issues that are “known” in the sense that others have confirmed them for you. Opera will likely have confirmed few of these publicly in any obvious place, but that’s to be expected with the current bug reporting system. Include any bug numbers you know of for reference.

Please avoid posting issues that only you have seen; instead, post those to the blog and try to gain consensus. Please avoid posting issues that have already been noted by Opera in the latest original post on the blog (some very well may have been confirmed in comments, but few read all several hundred of them with each release).”

Great idea, keep it up! 🙂

installer problems? Don’t Google for it and don’t try to get Apple help you

You know, some day I had this “error number 2738” error when trying to update to QuickTime 7.3.

I did the mistake to do what everything else will do at first; Google for the solution.

You will find “solutions” like registering .dll files, renaming folders, deleting folders, re-download .MSI files, links to FAQs, reinstall Windows and whatnot!

And no support I came accross yet ever managed to be able to actually tell what error “xyz” in an installer means. I mean if it would say “file missing” or whatnot, it would at least be helpful. But error numbers without references to what they mean or “unexspected error while installation” doesn’t help a bit!

All I got from Apple is a letter in my letterbox a few weeks ago telling me:

We don’t support this product (QuickTime)

The solution is easier than any registry hack! Download and use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. It will just remove all references to the sourse .MSI file so it no longer will be missed when you try to reinstall or update your program in question!

Skype for Linux with Video

Since a while now, Skype for Linux is available with Video (beta) and can be downloaded.
More info about this release can be found in the Skype for Linux Blog.

There are other changes that can be read in the release notes.

Next to the very much positive reactions from the Linux community, some complained that Skype would do better by fixing SkypeCasts problems with the Linux client which persist since over 6 months instead of adding more features.
This also did Skype cost some users.

Customer Support: Axle3D and MSI Taiwan

I am very often complain about bad customer support.

Now I want to point out 2 companies/devisions that are doing better than all the others.

Axle3D and MSI’s Taiwan HQ.

Usually, the main problem is that I have questions arising that require a certain background of knowledge or involvement of the technical support deparment involved.

Unfortunately, many devisions of the MSI support are either:

-lacking of knowledge
-slow
-proving wrong information
-giving up helping you and stop replying to you.

The manuals of my current motherboard had so many errors and the BIOS was so much bugged that I was just on my wits’ end. I wrote to MSI Taiwan as my last resort and they replied.
Since then, I write my questions directly to Taiwan.

The people there are pretty fast, helpful, enjoying themselves and sometimes even somewhat funny 🙂 Thanks guys!

Another very positive example is Axle3D whose technical support can be reached by emailing to tech[at]tdi.com.hk.

They are very skilled with a bunch of knowledge and reply within 24h to any question I sent.

Those 2 very important experiences made me confidental to stick with MSI and also to try out Axle3D this time.

Thanks guys! Keep it up!
