Blind man can see – thanks to Skype!

A blind man uses Skype video to let somebody guide him while he sails, rides a bike, ect!

it’s really ipressive and the below video even contains several demonstrations including a life one!

Source of this info: Skype Watch blog.

The original post can be found on Skype’s US blog (Part 1 / Part 2).

Quoting from Skype’s blog:

He notes that Gallagher’s system is a “seemingly simple, yet brilliantly clever remote guidance system. Ed mounts a web-camera to a strap around his forehead, and the camera wirelessly transmits the live video over the Internet using free software called Skype. Ed’s friends take turns acting as his guide. Both wear microphones and earpieces, and talk back and forth as the guide tells Ed what he’s ‘seeing.’ He’s testing the barriers, and regularly uses it to sail, but also tries shopping, cross country skiing and even biking in Golden Gate Park.”

Very cool!

Zlango TV gaming show!

earlier I mentioned Zlango the icon sign language which is supposed to be easy and covinient for everybody. Obviously not so much. At least it’s hard enough for a TV show in Israel in which one has to obviously guess what the signs of Zlango are supposed to say.

Check it out and have fun:

Today Opera launched Opera 9.6 which enhances the performance and flexibility of features many of you already have come to know and love, such as Speed Dial, session restore and mouse gestures (among other things).

My babble about the breach of Skype by TOM

It has been around lot recently, the privacy breach which was done by a Skype version manipulated by TOM.

In contrast to what Skype says, it wasn’t a big surprise for me. If you know the law and rules in China you know this had to happen. And I seriously hope Skype will sue them but this won’t happen. Despite all what happened, China is a huge and important market for them and probably to find some other Chinese partner won’t be so easy maybe.

It’s goood that they admitted it (Skype) but it’s very bad for Skype that it happened!

Skype-Watch sums up and describes the situation.

A bit lateron they even had a closer look on Β΄how the TOM version differs from the original Skype one.

fring for the iPhone 3G is out – on the AppStore

fring is here and this time *some* users can download from Apple’s AppStore.

Why I am saying “some”? Well, it appears that for example Russians can’t.

So with fring we have now an application that can do native Skype2Skype (and native ICQ audio chats) rather than re-directed through SkypeOut like IM+ for Skype does it!
However! : This function only works on wi-fi!
If you are on 3G or EDGE you are doomed. According to the fring forum the reason is Apple!

I have already found a few things they should change so I wrote an email to them:

on iPhone 3g needs a lot improvement!

Here are things you should change and I also would like to know whether they are in the plans:

-Support of Skype2Skype and ICQ2ICQ calls also on Edge and on 3G also being sensible and working after shaping got intact: The contract of T-Mobile Germany e.g. says that in Complete M tariff, speed is slowed down to ISDN speed if more than 500 MB is used per month!
Original Skype works fine on 64k ISDN lines, so please support it, too!

-Seeing of money balance for SkypeOut

-Seing in contact list who is on ICQ and who is on Skype. I have huge contact lists on both messangers and many are also on both! This makes things very uncompfortable

-Typing indicator

-Transferiing message history of conversations done on Fring when starting WIndows SKype (IM+ for Skype does this for example! : http://www.shapeservices.com/en/products/details.php?product=skype&platform=iphone)

-Seeing the user details of ICQ and the User Profile of Skype

Thanks in advance!
Sincerely,
Joerg Droege “

fring also made a video introducing fring for the iPhone3G in a video, watch it!:

Joost & Logitech SetPoint = no function! And it won’t be fixed!

Before I start this post, let me assure you that I have reported the problems (bugs) to both, Logitech and Joost over a year ago and sent an update to them. Joost didn’t reply and Logitech replied they will send it to the developers but it most likely won’t be fixed as there is no interest from the usership to fix what Logitech/Joost broke over a year ago.

The issue is that the media keys (play, next, previus, play, etc) of Logitech keyboards no longer work in Joost for Windows. Well, it used to work but doesn’t anymore.

But this is not important anymore as Joost moved to a browser plugin instead, the client for Windows is no longer available for download and also the blog is down with the error “forbidden”.

Is Joost about to die? I seriously hope not!

New Logitech QuickCam software release without echo cancellation

Logitech released recently a new Logitech QuickCam software which is supposed to fix a lot of issues with auto focus for HQ cameras of logitech, Skype issues, etc.

One thing that annoys me always – I guess you know it as a reader of my blog – is removed features that were useful. Logitech did this here by removing echo cancellation because they say it’s no longer needed. as “most instant messanger” have already have echo cancellation.

Well, what if you use some software that relied on this feature? Well, then you are doomed….

The Usership Won! -Skype 4.0 Beta 2 with classic view!

Skype got a lot of complaints regarding their new graphical user interface, so they had to re-think it and they did…. they added an option to go back to classical view.

I am pretty much sure, most, especially old users or users like from the first day like myself, will not use the new “hip” huge Skype 4 view but the classic one instead which means all the redesign the Skype team did was a …. flush down the toilet action.

The new beta 2 of Skype 4.0 can be downloaded here

Why the silence?

Hi everybody,

this is a message to everybody who asked me why I am on and off and wrote me “where are you?” messages on Skype/ICQ. Why is my blog no longer updated and why my forum got not spam cleaned and re-opened, etc and skype calls sound like shit if it works

Reason is: My cable internet (i.e. the ISP) sucks!

Since over 6 weeks now, my internet and phone is down almost daily between 9:30 PM and 11:30 PM. Especially great when I have late shift so I come home and everything is… dead!

I called them almost daily complaining. Shortly before my trip to Bulgaria they said they will fix it, then it worked for 2 nights just to find out again that after my return to Germany, the problem re-appeared!

They first meassured a noise once on my cable TV line and thought that’s causing the problem (on the way to them to the house in which I live there are 8 other clients using the line).

Tonight they told me on the hotline they found out the line is overloaded (that’s the disadvantage of cable internet over DSL internet: cable TV lines are a shared medium)
From the night of Friday to Saturday they will build up a second downstream line to cope with the capacity shortcommings.

I think I have the worst ISP on the whole planet!
If there was any other cable TV provider for my area (that also has similar speed for similar price) I guess I would switch.

Sorry once again!

I sorry I can catch up next week’s weekend when I have 4 days off.
