Bugs we all know and “love” from XP…

Am I the only one who screams “Hooray, there it is again!” when he realizes old bugs from Windows XP are back in Windows Vista?

One I remember very well is the disappearing drives in Windows after installing certain CD-ROM tools.

And thanks to Bob we know that the solution also works in Windows Vista solution:

He writes:

“Message:
This fix worked for me on Vista 64. Thanks

Message:
1. Click on START button, the click on RUN
2. Enter REGEDIT and press enter
3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
“Upperfilters”
“Lowerfilters”
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

Then close REGEDIT, shutdown & restart your PC”

Skype plugin is malware

Skype is lately under attack again. Just recently, a worm affected Skype for Windows users and now a Skype Extra which claims to be a security tool tries to steal password (login) data. Villu Arak writes in Skype Heartbeat:

“404-SkypeDefenderSetup.exe is classified as an Infostealer, that is, a Trojan horse program that attempts to steal sensitive information such as login credentials.

When executed it displays a confirmation window with the following text, β€œSkype-Defender(TM) Installed! Please login to your account to apply new plugins”.

When the user clicks the OK button, the malware displays what looks like a Skype login screen, but which has a different-looking sign-in button.

When the user enters the Skype username and password, the malware displays a message saying that the name and password were unrecognized.

The malware collects the entered Skype username and password, as well as all usernames and passwords saved in Internet Explorer, and sends them over to a website that collects this stolen data.

To remove the malware, please update your anti-virus software. At this time, we have notified F-Secure, TrendMicro, Symantec, WebSense, and FaceTime Security Labs. For manual removal it is enough to delete the 65404-SkypeDefenderSetup.exe file. “

Personally, I love the game Extras but I would not download and install just any random plugins, also “SkypeDefender”sounds weird and if Skype has a defender program, it would probably have been published on the Skype blogs or in the Extras panel of Skype!

MySpace users communicate with Skype users (+calls!) in November

According to several sources, MySpace users will be able to communicate with Skype userrs (enhanced features in MySpace that are related to Skype). This will also include the MySpace IM client.

Not included will be apan, China and Taiwan as read here. Despite the leadership change, Ebay doesn’t plan to change the strategy of Skype, that is to gain as much users as possible!

Denglish anyone? Translator for WLM

A friend of mine asked me to mention that he has coded a translator – for WLM – in Delphi – for your assistance incase you do not speak the language like your chat partner.

It’s simply a buddy to add to your buddy list.
Anyway, more info and commands to control the bot can be found at MSN QuickBot homepage!

Skype for Windows 3.6 beta with high quality video support

Skype had this almost DVD quality video thingie already announced as a hack back in January this high quality video ability. However, now it’s for real and officially announced by Villu Arak in the Share Skype English blog. Next to a dual-core CPU there are also hardware and software requirements for the webcam.

Even the Logitech webcam software for this is beta software so be careful when trying out!

Retro Gaming Orchestra video

I got knowledge of this wonderful and entertaining video thanks to a friend.

It’s a Retro Game Orchestra playing the music and sound effects of games while the game is running and being played on a big wall! πŸ™‚

Among them are classics like Commando, Rastan, Pong, Garrison, Frank Bruno’s Boxing, Frogger, Outrun, etc.
So these are mostly games I know from the C64 myself and played for hours and days! πŸ™‚

watch the video!

Is the new Internet Explorer 7 really an update?

There is some confusion about the recently released Internet Explorer 7 without WGA check. The reason for this is that this way even people who use a pirated Windows can now install IE7 and keep their system secure, since IE7 is a part of the Windows system.

There has been various speculation whether it’s really an update or if you do not have to install it if you already have a previous installation of the IE7 on your computer.

Luckily Bink.nu knows the answer.

The changes are according to them only:

“Minor changes to IE7 for Windows XP based on customer feedback:
-The menu bar is now visible by default.
-The Internet Explorer 7 online tour has updated how-to’s. Also, the β€œfirst-run” experience includes a new overview.
-We’ve included a new MSI installer that simplifies deployment for IT administrators in enterprises. Learn more about it here.”

RTX sent me a new Cordless USB DualPhone!

A few days ago, I really received a replacement for my old RTX Cordless USB DualPhone.

I had the problem that my Cordless USB Dualphone (so the old model has a display problem (the right side is cut off so I could only see… gaps) and since I have 2 years warranty and I bought it June 2006, I could it get replaced, problem was that the mail trader doesn’t have it on sale anymore and they would have had to send it directly to RTX and this would probably have taken weeks, but I had only this one DECT phone.

A few days later I received an email from RTX asking for my postal address.

And a week later, I received finally a parcel from Denmark, it was the one from RTX πŸ™‚

Despite the fact it’s the same model, there are some differences and changes:

1) The handset echo problem I had at PSTN calls is gone.
2) The display and backlight colour is yellow, not green anymore (I prefered the green to be honest)
3) The protection of the headset jack is now better, i.e. it’s as long as the hole and not longer as in the past
4) The connector cord of the battery pack is longer allowing you to place the bettery into the holder better

I have manged to replace the handset by signing off the old one and signing on the new one. The phone book is obviously either saved on the computer or in the base station since it took over the entries I had “in the old handset”.

Then I had to reinstall the Dualphone Suite again in order to get the handset updated to the actual firmware release.

I have to thank again Carsten Helmuth for his help and support and RTX for supplying a replacement unit!

According to Amazon customer reviews, the problem with the disapearing letters on the display after a year seems to be also with other handhelds of this dualphone. Let’s hope they improved this, aswell!

Opera Kestrel: My first experience

Weeks after the release of Opera Kestrel I can finally use and test it myself and it’s even so stable that I decided to keep it on my PC here for daily use.

Major differences are the ability to search inside websites you have aready visited by entering just a word in the addresss bar.

Also faster is the moving of spam emails to the trash.

However, I have noticed a few issues (which I already reported):

1) The CPU load is very high, much higher than with the old Opera 9.23 final.
And the perfomance was never good on Vista X64 anyway! (bug#287972)

2) Opera doesn’t really close when I decide to close it, it’s sill stuck in task manager as running procces, I have to kill it manually, sometimes I even have to restart Vista (bug#288010)

3) I have a ghost email in Trash (bug#288011)

I want to thank Daniel Goldman and Tim Altman for their dedication and emails. Especially thanks to the emails with Tim, the bugs could be fixed and other problems and issues I had could be solved by his very helpful hints!

Windows Vista anti-advertising video

This one is a pretty interesing anti-advertising mentioning the new Windows Cement, err Vista.

Actually, I do not think it’s that bad or that slow or crashing. I use it since it’s out and I am pretty much happy with it πŸ™‚

Found it on Skype-Watch blog.
